The Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network announces the second annual Caring Coalition symposium entitled "The War on Pain". This March 19, 2009 event will bring together physicians, pharmacists, social workers, clergy, nurses, medical administrators, hospice, and elder caregivers from throughout Southeast Michigan to address one of the most pressing issues facing the medical world today: the under-treatment of pain.
The War on Pain attendees will include physicians, pharmacists, medical administrators and other clinicians - representatives from the myriad of fields whose work requires them to understand the rapidly evolving area of pain management. In addition, we expect attendance from students in the health care field and the interested public.
Chaired by Carolyn Cassin, founder of the National Hospice Workgroup, and former head of Hospice of Michigan, the event will feature two of the leaders in pain management, Dr. Russell Portenoy and Dr. Perry Fine, as well as a distinguished panel of local experts discussing the state of pain management in our own community. Participants will receive four (4.0) continuing education credits, along with the opportunity to network with others in their field.
With this conference, we hope to raise consciousness about the need to treat pain, while sharing fundamentals and best practices for those in the medical, social work and spiritual care professions. We intend to expand the conversation on palliative care in the Detroit area, a focus that should continue long after the event, to eventually improve the quality of care for patients with chronic and terminal illnesses in our area.
Admission is $45, $100 for physicians and $20 for students. Includes a catered lunch.
The War On Pain symposium is presented by The Jewish Hospice & Chaplaincy Network and the Caring Coalition, in partnership with St. John Hospice and Wayne State University's Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Henry Ford Health System West Bloomfield Hospital, DMC Sinai Grace, Beaumont Hospitals and the Betsy & Dick DeVos Foundation. We recognize the generous donations of our sponsoring partners and agencies and also thank the Jack & Miriam Shenkman Caregiving Team and the Blanche and David Pollack Education Fund.
